6th Annual Asian Heritage Awards Honors Major Gen. Antonio Taguba on July 25th

Major General Antonio Taguba is the special honoree for the upcoming “Legacy and Legends,” the Sixth Annual Asian Heritage Awards, for his dedication to military service and his courage in exposing the truth about prisoner abuse in Abu Ghraib.
In addition, for the first time anywhere, the Asian Pacific Islander and military communities will join in celebrating achievement. The event on July 25th also marks the first time the staging place for a major API event played a significant role in the history of so many Asian Americans.
The venue for the awards ceremony is the USS Midway, the carrier launched at the end of World War II that now serves as a museum along the world famous Embarcadero in downtown San Diego. The carrier saw service off the coast of Japan, served in the Korean and Vietnam wars and helped rescue more than thirty-one hundred Vietnamese fleeing the fall of Saigon in 1975.
For the first time, all branches of the Armed Forces and the U.S. Coast Guard will play a part in the event to mark the introduction of a new category to the lineup of awards – military achievement.
Tickets to the event – $125 per person and $1,000 for a table of ten – are selling briskly. Reception starts 6, dinner 7:30 p.m. “We urge everyone to reserve a seat now,” said Rosalynn Carmen, president of Asia Media Inc. and Asia Media Los Angeles. “Last year, we were sold out two and a half weeks beforehand and we anticipate an even greater response because of the prestige and uniqueness of the celebration.”
Each year, a special panel selects an individual whose achievements, dedication to community and inspiration to others is worthy of Special Recognition. That award this year goes to Antonio Taguba, the second person of Filipino heritage to rise to the rank of major general in the U.S. Army.
“The entertainment lineup alone is unparalleled,” said Carmen, referring to performances by renowned classical cellist Tina Guo, who will perform solo and with her rock band Off the Deep End, popular folk singer Lindsey Yung, Healiis Polynesian Revue, the San Diego Chinese Dance Ensemble, and cultural performances by Pasacat (the Philippine Performing Arts Company) and the Vietnamese American Youth Alliance.
One-hundred and seven individuals and organizations – twice than last year – have been nominated for honors in 14 categories, ranging from education to community service.
