Rosary Groups for Jesus and Mary 25th Annual Rosary Rally

The Rosary Groups for Jesus and Mary of San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley is celebrating its 25th Annual Rosary Crusade on October 11, 2008 at the St. Elisabeth Church at the corner of Kittridge and Cedros Streets, Van Nuys, California. This year’s theme is: “Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, Intercede for All Mankind.†Rev. Fr. Albert Avenido, Spiritual Director of RGJM, will concelebrate in the Eucharistic mass.
The celebration will start at 1:00 p.m. by staging the “Living Rosary†inside the church. The “living rosary†is one of the main features of the yearly celebration since October 1, 1995, when the 200-feet long rosary with 6-inch beads was made and donated to RGJM by Nona Esguerra Hermosura of Panorama City. It is called the “living rosary†because each bead of the rosary is held by RGJM members and parishioners who participate in praying the rosary. The huge rosary was first used at the Rosary Rally held at St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church in Granada Hills on October 1, 1995. From then on, the huge rosary was used by RGJM for its yearly Rosary Rally.in October.
RGJM President Aurora La Madrid said that after the Eucharistic mass, a procession will be held at the church premises after which, a reception will follow at the church social hall. This year’s celebration is hosted by the Mary, Cause of Our Joy Rosary Group of Van Nuys and coordinated by its chairpersons, Bads Asuncion and Josie Binoya.
RGJM formally evolved as a separate devotional ministry in early 1981 through the initiative of Julie Tiempo Libatique, Frolin de la Cruz, and a few close friends. In 1983, membership to RGJM rapidly grew to several chapters. The first Rosary Rally was held at St. Euphrasia Church in Granada Hills. Every year thereafter, another parish church would host the October rosary rally with one or two rosary groups hosting it.
Today, there are about 20 active chapters of RGJM bringing devotion to the Blessed Mother to the homes of more than six hundred families in the West San Fernando Valley and in Simi Valley. RGJM’s statue of the Blessed Mother was obtained from Fatima, Portugal during a Marian pilgrimage of some rosary group members.
Next year’s rosary rally will be held at the St. Peter Claver Church in Simi Valley and will be hosted by the Mother of Good Counsel Rosary Group headed by Prudie and Julie Libatique.
