Glendale, CA: The winner of the Miss Asia USA Cultural Pageant held June 21, 2008 at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale is 26 year old Diane Yoo representing Korea. She stands 5′8″ and will represent Miss Asia USA. The reigning Miss Asia USA will also be The Ambassador of Culture and Goodwill. The Queen will grace a myriad of special public appearances to promote culture and goodwill. From early reports, Miss Asia Diane Yoo won the “Miss Asia USA 2008″ title amid controversies of her actions during the pageant.

MISS ASIA USA PICKS A LOW CLASS, HAUGHTLY GIRL TO REPRESENT THE ASIAN COMMUNITY:
I have been involved with pageants for over 7 years. I attended the Miss Asia USA pageant that is produced by Virgelia Productions last night. I could not beleive that Diane Yoo from KOREA was chosen as the winner!She represents everything that a pageant girl is not and one that should not have been chosen as the queen. In the parade of costumes Diane Yoo intentially stopped the production number when she walked out and to the front of the stage, stopped and did a shake and scream for about 10 seconds! This was not rehearsed and she stopped the other girls from coming out until she decided that she was through. When she was announced as the winner for best national costume the audience was silent. Confused and in disbelief!
In swimsuit Diane Yoo walked on stage with a haughty -come F_ _ _ me attitude and did a sleazy strip tease in her two piece bikini. Acting on stage like she was climaxing displaying low class and an embarrassment to the Asian community. You could hear the audience laughing including myself. Evening gown she came out in a hugh blue puff of fluff that looked more like a Costume than an evening gown. Her train took up 1/4 of the stage and all the other contestants had to go out of their way to avoid stepping all over it. Diane showed poor sporstmanship in intentionally hogging the stage and walking to the front of the stage in Evening Gown and standing there even though it was not her turn. In her question and answer segment of the pageant – Diane Yoo never answered the question and came off as the most phony, insincere drama queen to ever participate in the pageant. It was a disappointment when she was announced as the winner and I can only imagine the reactions of the other contestants. I know the reaction of the audience was dismay and confusion. This girl is going to be representing the Asian Community? What an embarrassment to the Asian people!

In regards to “FAIR JUDGING†I was shocked when the emcee introduced the panel of ELEVEN JUDGES
And then the emcee made the statement that Virgelia Villegas who is the owner/producer and director of the pageant was now going to be the 12th JUDGE!
How fair is that?
I have never heard of the owner/producer and director of a pageant also be one of the JUDGES too!
Sounds fishy to me!

Well, if she won fair then we all would care. But the entire Asian community lost when Diane Yoo took the crown.
This was a political venture on the producer, organizer, director & judges part!
Diane should be embarrassed to be Miss Asia USA. She paid $$$ to win and shouldn’t be looked at as a role model! She should be stripped of the crown and the newspaper & media should cover the real story here… the charade behind the scenes which lead to a poor contestant winning. She shouldn’t have even made it to the top 10. She didn’t carry herself like a queen nor did she look like a winner in the end! The audience didn’t cheer or even want to watch her be crowned they all walked out in disbelief! I wouldn’t recommend anyone participate in this pageant in the future. It has NO REPUTATION after this! This pageant is one big joke and so is the organizer & winner!
Sorry for saying this, but I see that these messages are written by the parents of the girls that didn’t win.
In pageants there are never losers, because every experience in life has its own value. And to always do your best is the most precious treasure.
And all of you have to be sure that your daughters will be do better in future pageants, now with more experience and wisdom.
Diane Yoo was really the best for me, I love her body, style and charisma.

Diane Yoo is the worst queen ever. It was obviously that she [edited]. There is no beauty inside and outside. All people could see that even from audience. She does not deserve to be in this pageant at all. I do not think that Miss Korea or Miss China are beautiful at all in and out. I know some story about them that could improve that. There were so much gorgeous girls who even did not make top 10. It was not fair for Middle Eastern girls. They were obviously more beautiful than Asian girls. All girls should sue Virgilia for this unfair pageant. I hope there will not be Miss Asia USA Pageant anymore. Korea should be not Miss Asia USA 2008.
I think this pageant truly is about making money, obsiously if the producer is involved being a judge, that itself speaks to the “integrity” of the production. What Miz said in the 6/18/2009 yelp post is true. Linda Phung’s boyfriend, who was jailed for internet fraud, started that pageant for her to win. Even the 2nd annual queen decided to step down because she could not support the pageant and its dishonesty. Winners were not given their prizes.

Yes, I can confirm this pageant is 100% a scam and the first pageant was set up for Linda to win. There was no other way – she is not attractive and is a midget. It was set up for her to win from the start. And her low-life boyfriend went to prison for credit card fraud. If you don’t believe it, look up the information on who registered the name Miss National Asia and it traces back to his ghetto family. These people make me sick. How is the stupid pageant still running???
It is not nice to say such things, especially if you do not know everything. As my experience in the Miss Asia USA pageant, i had a great time, learned a lot of things and made great friends, that was a great experience. it does not matter who wins or looses. I think The pageant is creative and fun and thats what its about. Dont judge so you will not be judged. No one is perfect in this world, we are all just trying to make it. Love.

Well, I was once a contestant of the Virgelia Production, this production is only care about money, that’s all. If you see all their previous queen, they’re all rich. Example, the queen from Mrs Asia USA 2007-2008 (Dona Chou), she is [edited]. One of the contestant who represent Korea (Jane P Smith), she was a runner up for the Mrs Asia USA 2007-2008, because she did not paid the $30K like Donna Chou, she got piss so she attend the Ms America 2007-2008 right after the pageant and it end up that she won the crown. Virgelia Production is famous for gold digger. Whoever give her more money, that person will be the winner.
The popularity award and the people choice award are the awards that present to the people with the most money contribution.
This organization should be shut down because it’s not fair for those contestants who compete with all their best, also, it’s a waste of time and effort.

however, the pageant community should make it ABSOLUTELY clear and discourage the use of bribery with money etc. and not support productions that do so… it just gives all pageants a bad name to the outside world
there really is nothing wrong with a pageant.. if done correctly, it goes beyond beauty and promotes leadership, excellence in all areas (esp. one’s character), and community service
and if any of the allegations are true, something should be done to correct it.. especially to prevent any FURTHER scandals and upsets in the future(whether in this pageant or another pageant by the same person) a clear message needs to be sent
SCANDAL ROCKS MISS ASIA USA PAGEANT
Glendale, CA — July 2, 2008 — The Miss Asia USA 2008 Pageant was held on June 21, 2008 at the Alex Theater in Glendale, California. 31 delegates participated in this year’s pageant and Diane Yoo representing Korea and from Houston, Texas was chosen as Miss Asia USA 2008. Rather than a traditional pageant where delegates compete for winning a title, it was an unfair opportunity for the owner Virgelia Villegas, to choose in a public venue, her own personal pick as to whom she wants to represent the title.
Negative complaints and many questions were raised by delegates, parents, volunteers and staff at the pageant. Among them is harassment at rehearsals and in emails, battery police report, talks of sabotage and special treatment given to Diane Yoo who was chosen as this year’s winner of the pageant.
Disbelief and confusion during the pageant competition when the emcee made the surprise announcement that owner, producer and director Virgellia Villegas was now going to be the 12th Judge to decide who the winner would be. Another complaint was raised when staff member and choreographer Evelyn Lin was also offering during orientation, her services to the delegates as a Personal Private Pageant Coach for a $100 per hour fee. Special line-up placement was given to these delegates and showcased in production numbers.
The pageant claims that no pageant experience is required and the web site states that free workshops and training would be provided to the delegates but was never given. The pageant staff was less than supportive to Miss Cambodia Christilily Chiv who wears a Size 8, telling her she was fat and needed to wear her sarong during the swimsuit competition. After 2 rehearsals she received 2 emails from Ms. Villegas threatening to remove her from the competition if she did not see improvement in her walking or poise and even reminded her that her entry fee is non refundable. On June 27, 2008 in Los Angeles, Miss Cambodia, Christilily Chiv filed a Battery Police Report against Miss Asia USA’s choreographer Evelyn Lin for hitting her during the Miss Asia USA Press Conference held at The City Club.
Special treatment and privileges was given to Diane Yoo who won Miss Asia USA. Among them is allowing Miss Yoo to have a staff of 7 people in the dressing room to help her during the pageant where as the other delegates were allowed only 2. Stating in several write ups about the pageant that Diane Yoo attended all the rehearsals is in accurate.
The lack of full disclosure on the entry form and web site http://www.missasiausa.org as to all mandatory fees required to participate in the pageant and what these fees cover. A non-refundable $500.00 fee to enter is all that is stated on the entry form but never states what the $500.00 fee is for. At orientation the delegate are told that they must sell 3 full page ads at $500.00 each and a minimum of 30 tickets to the pageant. A couple of weeks before the pageant, delegates are told that they must fulfill these requirements or they will not receive their prizes if they are chosen as one of the Top Ten Finalists. Full disclosure was never given in writing nor is it stated on the web site as to the scoring system and how Miss Asia USA is chosen. Prizes to the winners and runner-ups were never disclosed. Best In Swimsuit and Miss Charity was never awarded even though it was advertised in the program book and told to the delegates that it would be awarded on stage at the pageant. Cash was encouraged, yet thousands of dollars in receipts promised to the delegates were dodged by the pageant staff.
A photo shoot was arranged by the executive director of the pageant. The delegates were told in an email and during orientation that it was complimentary. Upon arrival the photographer told the delegates that they needed to pay a $100.00 to $350.00 fee.
Although the practice of popularity is accountable in many pageants, there is a specific delineation of points related to it. Where as in the Mrs Asia USA and Miss Teen Asia USA Pageant the number of points is purely at the discretion of Virgelia Villegas, rather than a set number.
it seems that the last 4 winners were all from houston! (Gigi Lee, founder/president of Asia Houston Network and former Miss Korea Texas 05) ok i am now sold that there was some MAJOR favoritism.. (it can happen.. but coupled w/ everything else-current rumors.. it just looks bad)

Again, these allegations cannot be taken at heresy, but with compelling evidence.
all the comments serve a purpose to unify the unheard PEOPLE’S voices so a difference can be made in future pageants..
i doubt anyone would come forward when even the web community can’t express their opinions w/out censorship.. there have been a number of new sites that are just NOW showing up have extensive registration req. AND comment approval by the moderators to even post a comment! unlike like those other sites- pinoywired has received a great response by the public without fear of ostracism..

This production is a business venture… She is all for money! CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW MUCH MONEY SHE MAKES ON THIS PRODUCTION? BUT LOOK AT THEIR PRIZES. THESE ARE MAINLY GIVE AWAYS (SAMPLE PRODUCTS FROM THE SPONSORS) IT DOES NOT COST ANYTHING ON THE PRODUCTIONS. SHE MUST BE VERY RICH BY NOW ALSO.

Eve I think you missunderstand or maybe I do.
But anyway the above prizes mentioned is a way of the pageant telling a delegate what the benefits would be by participating in the pageant. And that many pageants claim that by your participation you will gain skills as if you took a personal development class from a modeling school that usually costs around $3,000 for the full course.
Many pageants do not even offer these kind of prizes for just being a delegate. So I think its good just as long as the delegate is really given what was promised. There would be a schedule for the delegates of when and where they can participate in the workshops if they so choose to do so.
Also if you promise the delegates certain gifts then the sooner you deliver it to them the better. It shoud be done before the pageant and not afterwards.
I personally think that for just being in the pageant these are nice prizes to give the delegates. A Sherry Hill dress has to be at least $200.00. For someone who really would like to learn about cosmetology getting a full $8000.00 scholarship to attend a certified beauty school would be a great benefit. I won a $10,000 scholarship to Joe Blasco School of Makeup and went for two years and was a makeup artist for several years. I still use alot of what I learned even now.
Also it may not cost anything to Virgelia but it does take a lot of time and energy to get them. Many pageants do not even offer participation prizes. So this is good as long as she delivers ahead of time.

Also I just wanted to clarify that there are two kinds of sponsorships that pageants look for. Sponsorships for MONEY and sponsorships for IN KIND SERVICES.
The prizes above is considered IN KIND SERVICES and the person donating these gifts or prizes are then given a Ad in the program book, tickets to the pageant, appearance by your queen, etc… IN KIND SERVICES can also be printing, set decorations or anything that you can trade out that the person donation the products or services.
But what the complaints are is that Virgelia tells everyone that NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY – and that by being in the pageant you will recieve all these free lessons and workshops in protocol, etiquette, poise, speaking and walking, etc. She claims that its like taking a course that you would pay for at a modeling school.
If this is true, then sending emails to a contestant telling her that in her (Virgelias) opinion she is not improving and if she does not improve then she is going to kick her out of the pageant. And oh by the way … your $500.00 entry fee, tickets and Ads you sold is NON REFUNDABLE?
That just is not right.
And you cannot be yelling and screaming at the delegates during rehearsal telling them that they are slow and stupid and expect them to feel as if this is a positive learning experience whether you win or lose the crown. Its abusive to the girls and in the end the delegate feels terrible and then they do not want to return and try again next year Which she has very few returning delegates to any of her pageants. T

Lets see… there is a program book that has 11 Judges with bios and pictures and now Virgelia is the surpise 12th Judge. Why? What For?
And how can she sincerely judge a delegate who is competing on stage when she is in the Orchestra Pit with headphones on her head DIRECTING the show? How fair is this? Most pageants are won or lost by 1 or 2 points so putting another judge in the mix can change all the scores and outcome of the pageant.

I have not been in this pageant before, but judging by the comments and article, I have decided not to participate in this fraud pageant. There are numerous other reputable pageants out there which represents Asian Americans. For those of you who would like to consider a true Asian American pageant, I would recommend the Miss National Asia Pageant as I have joined it before. I heard this scandal about the Miss Asia USA, but on Miss National Asia’s defense, I competed in that pageant last year and I do not believe it is rigged. I’ve competed in rigged pageants like miss asian america, miss vietnam usa, you can tell when something is NOT right in a pageant. I didnt place, a Korean/Chinese girl from LA named Dow An Kou won. She was very beautiful and talented. Very deserving of the title. I met Linda Phung (linn) and she is such a sweet genuine person who really cares about the girls who compete in the pageant. I competed last year, Linn was the director. She taught us how to walk, speak, pose, etc. I have heard many rumors about her as well. But seriously, lets get our facts straight here. For Linn’s BF to OWn the pageant and also be a member of the judge panel?! Get real people! If we are going to start rumors, at least make them somewhat believable. I know the girl who started that rumor was from the year before me (2nd year). She was a sore loser because she didnt win and took it out on Linn. The Queen from the second year was DETHRONED and stripped of her title for not fulfilling her duties. She did not step down. I know theres alot of pageants out there that aren’t legit, but please make sure you get the facts straight. If you have questions, ask me, I’ve been in all th epageants in the world.

I know Linda Phung competed in Miss Asian America and was upset because she didn’t place. At least she got Miss Congeniality. Heard she was so bitter after she competed that she decided to ask her boyfriend to start a pageant for her so she could have a title.

Anh, this is from my point of view. (By the way, i competed the same year as you but your name doesn’t ring a bell. Did you go by an English name or different name?)
I’m a past miss national asia contestant and wanted to state things from my experience and facts told to me.
As with all pageants, I was able to meet alot of nice girls and had an enjoyable time. The staff were all very kind to me (since it’s their job).
It is true that Linda’s bf, Alvin (aka Vin) Ma, was put in prison for fraud. Here’s an article:

When initially signed up for miss national asia, I didn’t come across this article. However after i signed up, when I asked Nancy Hua (a bay area makeup artist) about the pageant, she told me about how Alvin Ma was the producer of Miss National Asia’s pageant and that the crown was given to his gf Linda Phung. I was also told the same facts by bay area designer QC Pham. However, I had already registered and payed for the pageant, so I decided to just go through with it.
From my experience at the pageant, I can definitely say that there are some questionable and shady things.
First off, I looked at the Miss National Asia 2008 booklet and they listed a person named Gregory as the director, but not once did we see a Gregory show up at our rehearsals or even meet us. My personal opinion on this is that “Gregory” is probably a friend or relative’s name that they’re using to cover up the fact that Alvin Ma is the one running it all. (Back then, Linda was still the current queen so they couldn’t put her down as the director, but now i believe she is listed as the director).
Secondly, the ENTIRE staff during my year of competition were ALL Alvin and Linda’s friends. Basically, it was Alvin, Linda, Alvin’s brother Calvin, and their friends running the pageant. It made me very suspicious to see that. It made me think… “if this pageant is legit, where are all the directors and producers who started it? Why is it all Alvin and Linda’s people running the show?” I also noticed that Linda and Alvin had the final say in everything.
Lastly, another suspicious thing I saw was the choice of winner. I noticed early on during rehearsals that Linda was very ‘buddy buddy’ with Dow An (the winner that year). When the 2008 booklet came out, I realized that Dow An had a very big sponsor which was the Hotel Huntington Beach. She also was the only one that paid Linda to do her makeup for sponsor visits and the night of the pageant. So those two aforementioned facts alone made Dow An favorable in Linda’s eyes since Dow An brought in money for the pageant. And if Dow An was given the Queen title, Hotel Huntington Beach would continue to sponsor Miss National Asia.
Also, during rehearsals, Linda gave us 3 sample questions for us to practice and kind of put us on the spot at the moment to prepare us for the pageant. On the night of the pageant, when I drew a question from Linda’s hand, she opened it and read me a question. When she opened the paper, I could see through the light that there was NOT just one question on there. There were multiple questions on the paper and she selected one to ask me. When it was Dow An’s turn to select a paper, Linda asked her a question that we had already been asked during rehearsal. So my opinion on the facts I just stated is that Dow An was chosen because she brought in money for the pageant. On the night of the pageant, Linda purposely gave Dow An an easy, previously-rehearsed question so that Dow An could answer it well and make it look like Dow An is a worthy winner. All the other finalists got harder questions that were not reheared during rehearsal.
One last thing. In previous year’s competition in 2007, Leena Nguyen did not get the title Miss California Asia at Miss National Asia’s pageant. All Leena won was the title Miss Talent. However, during the 2008 pageant, they brought Leena out and introduced her as last years Miss California Asia. Leena became friends with Linda after the 2007 pageant, so it looks like Linda just gave Leena that title. When Leena was introduced to us contestants, she was just introduced as Miss Talent… but a few days into rehearsal, Linda decided to give her the Miss California Asia title since the winner of that title didn’t want affiliations with Miss National Asia. All the above things that I just mentioned are from my personal opinion. I actually placed as a Princess that year for Miss National Asia (and yes, I did bring in a sponsor for them) but I still can’t help but wonder if they would have even given me a spot on their royal court at all if I was not well spoken, sang well, and brought in a sponsor. There was just alot of shadiness that I felt with the pageant. If you question anything i mentioned above, feel free to read the above article and look up Miss National Asia registry with the California Secretary of State. They registered in 2006 under Alvin’s name.
To all girls who are thinking of competing in Miss National Asia: I would say please think carefully before you commit. If any of you have any further questions, feel free to submit a comment and I will try to get back to you. Miss National Asia was fun since you got to be around girls your age and get dressed up… but don’t be hopeful of winning a crown. Linda and the staff will be very nice to you… how genuine is their kindness if up for you to decide. You’ll probably learn a thing or two about walking, posing, and public speaking too. Just dont have to high of hopes on becoming queen

I don’t agree the pageant is a scam, sounds more like a business venture for ex-cons + their conceited tranny gfs. Their job is to put on a “good show” and girls pay them to do their job.
