Arnel Pineda is featured in the June 2008 issue of GQ which is now on magazine stands everywhere. “He Didn’t Stop Believin,’” was written by Alex Pappademas with exclusive photos by Andrew Hetherington and spread over 7 pages of the magazine starting on page 118.

The feature article provided a wide-scale background information on Arnel Pineda covering many angles including his bio and membership in different bands in Manila, update on Zoo re Arnel, the consular officer - Ben - who interviewed Arnel at the U.S. Embassy in Manila for his visa, contrary feedbacks on Arnel as the new lead singer by old and new fans alike.

Pappedemas noted, “Pineda may have the most Dickensian backstory in rock history,” with this fairy tale story of a struggling Filipino artist chosen as the new lead singer in a world-renowned rock band. He touched on the numerous Asian fans at the recent Planet Hollywood Journey concert in Las Vegas as well as a lot of behind the scene insights.

The article also covers the extensive history of iconic band, Journey, including Neal Schon’s search for a new lead singer, Steve Perry’s short interview about Journey and Arnel, Journey’s successes, plus a brief list of other Journey lead singers before Arnel Pineda, “rebirth” of Journey with Arnel, with some final words from Kevin Shirley who worked with Journey for decades.

There are so many more items of interest posted in the article. Pick up your copy of the June 2008 GQ before they run out.

How Arnel Pineda Got His Visa at the U.S. Consulate in Manila

Emails have been circulating about this anecdote of how Arnel Pineda got his U.S. Visa in Manila. Imagine a Filipino coming over for an interview and saying that he was auditioning as the lead singer of the rock band, Journey, because Neal Schon invited him to.

Well, we also found the same anecdote related in the website of “Immigration Daily,” the news source for immigration professionals, titled “Amazing Visa Journey” near the middle of this webpage at ILW.COM. Judge for yourself :-)

  4. I was listening to the radio today and heard what I thought was a new steve perry song, I was thinking maybe he was timing his new release at the same time to screw up journeys new release.
To my happy ears came the dj saying it was the new single from journeys new album!!
I will be first in line to get it. I have been a fan of journey for a long long time, and it was such a joy to find out that not only is Arnel an outstanding singer, he is Filipino!!
Which is such a great thing for all the kababayan around the world, from Carol Banawa to Lea Solanga to the Filipina on Oprah, to my much loved wife, Gloria. She loves to sing too, and has a great voice.
Arnel, I wish the best to you and Journey. I look forward to seeing you in concert, so come on up to Green Bay Wisconsin, we are so hyped up!!
    You guys rock!!

  6. Hello Arnel,
I bought the last journey revelation CD the day it was released.I couldn’t stop listening to your very good voice & I couldn’t stop watching your Las Vegas live disc too;it is very Tremendous!Perfect!Amazing!you are Unbelievable!Wow!

  7. Hello Arnel,
I put your CD’s & also Steve Perry’s greatest hits in my stereo;& listen to it over & over & over again! guess what? you & Steve sound equal. But you did a whole lot of tremendous stuff-unique style of singing which Steve P. did not do.What i’m saying is based on what i’ve heard on the record & it’s absolutely true. You are just a gift from God!

Posted by flor persegas | June 8, 2008, 3:56 pm
  8. Neal Schon wrote:”Thank God for the almighty internet & YouTube…Ladies & Gentlemen…Arnel Pineda” all i can say is WOW!.(that was hilarious & cute)

And you Arnel wrote:Thank you so very much to all my fellow filipinos around the world who believed in me…MABUHAY TAYONG
    LAHAT!!!…

This is the proof that i bought revelation last 6/03/08 at Wal-Mart here in Alaska.I believed in you Arnel…Thank’s a lot! I enjoy listening journey.

P.S.please,you stay humble…& don’t do drugs…seems like the journey band is truly happy for having you in the music business.

  9. filipino pride is one thing but most filipinos who are jumping on the bandwagon are simply annoying. why wave filipno flags in the air at concerts? this is band not a presidential election. most never even knew a word to any of the songs before arnel took lead. dont make this a race issue. listen for his talent not his race otherwise he will be considered nothing more by most.

  10. if arnel was hispanic none of you would have bought the album

Posted by jose peregrino | June 9, 2008, 2:05 pm
  11. Hey guys,
If Arnel was hispanic or mexican or whatever,as long as he sounds like he does in his cds,i will still buy his records.i bought Steve Perry’s records; he is Portuguese but i don’t care!

Posted by flor persegas | June 9, 2008, 5:36 pm
  12. I was listening too Arnel’s song “Iiyak Ka Rin” his voice doesn’t go with tagalog very well; so i didn’t buy that record.Sorry! but i bought the new CD “Revelation” because his voice fits all the song on the album.& is one of journeys best albums.
I have albums with Steve Perry & Arnel as lead singers for journey. They are both amazing.

Posted by flor persegas | June 9, 2008, 6:21 pm
  13. that is great but i am talking about the majority of filipinos who are jumping on the bandwagon who never cared for Journey unlike yourself

Posted by jose peregrino | June 10, 2008, 7:32 am
  14. @Will: Hello Wisconsin! Welcome and thank you for visiting, kababayan!

@Catherine: I know what you mean. I was the first buyer of the set at the Wal-Mart store in L.A. The next 3 people standing in line to pay for their purchases were Pinoys who bought the set as well.

@Flor P.: Hello Alaska! Welcome back. Glad that you were able to buy the Revelation set. Thank you as always for your interesting comments.

@Jose P: Welcome and thank you for your perspective.

I join fellow Pinoys in sharing the enthusiasm and pride for a very talented Filipino who was made the lead singer in a respected and legendary American band. Arnel deserves our kudos.

Let all those who want to, jump on the bandwagon. Why discourage them? I say if you’re a real Journey fan, then you would be happy that there are new Journey fans because of Arnel Pineda. All bands, not only Journey, need and want new fans for longevity and more CD sales. The more Journey fans, the merrier, I say.

Many Pinoys have always enjoyed and have bought Journey music. The fact that there is a Filipino in the band, just makes Pinoys around the world more motivated to buy Journey’s music and to show our whole-hearted support of the band with Arnel. This translates for higher CD sales for the band. This is all good.

Thank you Neal, Deen, Jonathan and Ross for Arnel in Journey!!!

I like what you said “interesting comments”

Posted by flor persegas | June 13, 2008, 7:40 pm
  16. @Jose P: I see what you’re talking about. I was only paying attention on your second message.

The jumping on the bandwagon filipinos (that you’ve talking about),who wave flags at Arnel’s concert, they were just proud, excited, & happy for Arnel- i can see it! & i can understand that! i would be excited too if i see journey in a concert here in Alaska.

  17. To all the readers and especially to those who left comments here at PW, a big Thank You!

Having grown up and listened to (and loved) Journey Albums (Remember the LPs and cassettes) thru the years, I feel however you see it, Arnel Pineda has the vocals and the performance fit for a Rock Band like Journey.

Revelation CD/DVD is a new chapter to the journey of the band, but I do agree that the previous releases from the beginning bring flood of memories to a large following in the Philippines even before Arnel! Journey after all is a fav band of the 80s.

One on my list is the song “Loved By You” on the album ‘Arrival.’

Revelation opens a new chapter after the ff releases most of us are familiar with: Arrival, Escape, Infinity, Raised On Radio, The Essential Journey, Captured, Evolution, Journey (the Album), Red 13, Time3, Departure, Frontiers, Look Into The Future, The Ballads, Dream After Dream, In the Beginning, Next, and of course Trial By Fire…. and now Revelation !

What can I say but ‘carry on the beat Arnel…..’ Neal Schon (lead guitarist) could never have been wrong. As he stated, Arnel has the pipes for another Journey.

  19. Congratulations to Arnel Pineda and the Journey band.

Former Journey manager, Herbie Herbert, was quoted in melodicrock.com as saying on how Arnel sounds like Steve Perry, “. . . he came better than close.”

The review of Journey’s Revelation by melodicrock is worth reading. It will blow you away:

  20. i completely agree with jose perigno. those pinoys waving the flag in the concerts are the ones downgrading arnel’s quality. it’s like the chimays rooting for ate guy. we are all proud of arnel. let’s support him and the band by buying their dvds/cds and watching their concerts but pls do not wave the flag there as if you were in a rally. you will just annoy the other audience.

  22. In my younger years I really love rock and roll bands, and while I’m in the service(USNAVY)I, and my compatriots used to club hopping anywhere the navy will take us. We have seen many pinoys, pinays cover rock groups that could really play and sings like the originals. We used to term them placado. We always talked about, and discuss what if these cover pinoys rock band that would be discovered by american producers, could they make it in the big league. Although they were great rock band, as much as we want to have a dream that oneday there will be a pinoy that will be discovered by American rock band, we thought that it is only wishful thinking, but after all those years of wishful thinking, our thoughts, and wish have come true.

    “Don’t stop believing”

Arnel you are awesome, though I’m now a grandfather, you have recaptured my dreams to see a pinoy in a such prestigious rock band. And also I felt like I’m in my twenties again. My daughter as soon as she heard Journey, she said, is that Perry. No, it is pinoy, it is home grown rock vocalist, and replies, I you sure dad, and I said, yes. She love journey music, and she is excited to see them in Irvine concert.

When they were young I used to sing rock music to put them in their sleep, but I could not sing at all, now I don’t have to sing, Arnel would be the voice.

Good Luck and may God bless you and your family tremendously.

  25. I have tickets to see Journey in Concord with my wife on Sept. 24th. This will be my 4th ever concert of them and it will be special partly because of Arnel. I too, was one of the first to buy the “Revelation” CD in the Elk Grove, CA. Walmart Store after midnight. I don’t regret it one bit. I have been a Journey fan since 1978 when they came out with the “Infinity” Album featuring Steve Perry. Yet, what makes Journey a special rock band is the fact that they were based out of the Bay Area which is where I was born & raised. I do go to lots of concerts. It may be Rock, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Country, etc…. Therefore, it isn’t a matter of waving a filipino flag. It’s just a matter of enjoying life and being Merry. Thanks to Journey and the discovery of a newly talented singer in Arnel Pineda!
