A Filipino in Prayer

(Scenario: A contemporary Filipino in the Philippines saying his evening prayers. Amidst the rice shortage and rising fuel costs, he still hopes and believes in Divine Providence)

Dear Lord Jesus,

Mainit at parating umuulan. At saka yung elections dito, nakupo, barilan!

Yung United istates ba. Sabi nila maganda daw doon. Maraming pera mga tao at may mga sariling kotse lahat sila.

Meron akong pinsan galing California. Sabi dalawang bahay niya at bawat anak niya merong sariling sasakyan.

Araw-araw daw, isteak kinakain nila. Pagdating dito, humahanap ng isda! Dito eh, isda ulam naming everyday. Sana magkaroon din kami ng isteak.

Lord, it’s been a long time na nagdadasal ako sa iyo. Sana naman ipadala mo ako sa America. Kapag doon na ako, I will thank you by praying two times a day.

Do not forget the unfortunate Filipinos dito sa Pinas. Goodnight Lord at saka mahal kita..

Author’s Note: This prayer piece is not meant to demean the Filipinos in the Philippines. It is a gentle reminder to the Filipinos in America (or abroad) as to how lucky we are. The Lord Jesus would want us to reach out and help our less fortunate brothers and sisters back home.
